About Dental Fillings
Plaque is the soft, sticky film that collects on teeth daily. Saliva and daily brushing remove most of the plaque, but if any remains, it produces acid that can degrade the enamel on your teeth, resulting in cavities.
A dental filling is used to fill the void that results from Dr. O’Dell removing the decay in your tooth. The filling material will protect your tooth from further decay and prevent structural damage to your tooth. Virtually anyone who has a cavity is a good candidate for a filling.
Why Choose Tooth-colored Fillings?
For decades, silver amalgam has been the preferred material used to create dental fillings. However, tooth-colored resin fillings are becoming more widely used because they provide several very important advantages:
- They require less tissue removal than amalgam fillings.
- They blend with the tooth to achieve a natural-looking appearance.
- While amalgam fillings expand and contract with temperature, which can cause small fractures in the teeth, tooth-colored fillings fluctuate at the same rate as your dental tissue.
- Tooth-colored fillings bond more securely to your teeth.
- Silver amalgam contains trace amounts of mercury. While there is no hard evidence demonstrating that this poses a threat to your health, many patients find that tooth-colored fillings provide greater peace of mind.
To place a filling, Dr. O’Dell will first numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic. Then, he will remove the decayed tissue. After isolating the tooth to keep it dry, he will apply the tooth-colored composite material to replace the decayed tissue. Next, Dr. O’Dell will cure the material with a special light to ensure that it bonds properly to the tooth. Finally, he will polish the composite material and ensure that you have a properly balanced bite.
The Best Defense
The best way to avoid needing fillings is to prevent cavities from forming. Good at-home oral hygiene includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day (preferably after every meal) and flossing at least once a day. Dr. O’Dell recommends routine professional cleanings (every six months for most patients) in order to reach the difficult-to-clean areas of your mouth. Eating a healthy diet and avoiding foods that are high in sugar will help to keep your teeth free from cavities.
