Orthodontics Can Create a Beautiful, Healthy Smile
Dr. Van O’Dell provides expert treatment with orthodontics to patients in North Little Rock, AR, using the best materials and most sophisticated methods. Today’s braces have come a long way from those of the past, and can be an excellent investment in your oral health.
We offer advanced orthodontic treatment to address several forms of malocclusion, including overbite, underbite, and crossbite.
Orthodontic treatment can correct crooked or crowded teeth, or misalignment between the upper and lower jaws. A more symmetrical, attractive smile is not the only reason for orthodontic treatment. Straight teeth are easier to clean, and a properly aligned bite ensures optimal oral function when speaking and eating. Orthodontics can help you avoid oral health problems such as tooth decay, tooth loss, gum disease, abnormal wear, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Classes of malocclusion (bite misalignment) are used to describe problems such as underbite, overbite, and crossbite. Bite problems first become evident between the ages of 6 and 12, and they are best treated while a child is growing. For this reason, braces are usually associated with young people. However, patients of nearly any age can be good candidates for braces, as long as their teeth are healthy. It is usually recommended that a child undergo pre-screening at age 7 for possible bite problems. Early screening allows for more options in treatment, and sometimes a retainer is sufficient for correcting bite alignment. In general, patients with healthy teeth may be good candidates for braces if they are experiencing:
- Malocclusion resulting in an uneven bite pattern
- Crooked teeth
Dr. O’Dell offers orthodontic treatment with traditional braces, consisting of metal bands, wires, and brackets that patients wear on their teeth. Modern braces have improved greatly over the years, and more patients are wearing braces than ever before. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, adults make up almost 25% of those wearing braces. With newer materials, the force applied to move the teeth is gentler and more consistent, and the braces don’t require adjustment as often. Patients of all ages can enhance their self-esteem and improve their oral health by straightening their smiles with modern orthodontics.
Diagnosis and Treatment
After a careful review of your case, Dr. O’Dell will develop a treatment plan that begins with placing the braces. Small brackets will be cemented to the teeth on your upper arch, lower arch, or both. The brackets are connected by a wire, and you will visit Dr. O’Dell periodically to have the wire tightened so the teeth gradually move into their correct position. Length of treatment varies from patient to patient, but it is generally between 12 and 18 months. After the braces come off, you will wear a retainer for a period of time to keep your teeth in proper alignment.
Orthodontic treatment is a safe, proven way for Dr. O’Dell to help you look your best and maintain optimal oral health. If you would like to learn more about braces for you or a family member, schedule a personal consultation today.
